Places I've played in Europe in 8 Tours

Places I've played in Europe: all with Zeitgeist, except 2001 in London with ICE and in 2009 and 2011 with the Lincoln Youth Symphony.

Spring 1985

Zagreb, Yugoslavia - April 21 - This was when the six republics of Yugoslavia were still together. Today it’s Zagreb, Croatia. Zeitgeist, my group, got a grant to commission John Cage (Terry Riley and Frederic Rzewski were the other two recipients). We premiered Music for four in Zagreb at Lisinski Center. A cruise missile flew through the foyer in 1989 or 1990. Click here to see some fotos.

Lubljana, Yugoslavia - April 23 - Again with Cage, we played Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana two nights after Zagreb. In a very delighted way, Cage told us his doctor had just told him it was OK for him to go ‘off the wagon’. He was a great story teller. Click here to see some fotos.

Oprtalj, Yugoslavia - April 25 - Today it’s in Croatia. It’s on the Istrian Peninsula below Triest. This and the next three concerts were with the Zeitgeist quartet without Cage. See pretty pictures.

Brussels, Belgium - May 1 - at Palais des Beaux Arts hosted by Stichting Logos

Ghent, Belgium - May 2 - at the Music Conservatory presented by Stichting Logos. There was a stampede of audience members for the doors during Fuentes’ Risas de los incas.

Schwäbisch Hall, West Germany - May 8 - Back then there were two Germanies of course. I went to language school twice in this charming town at the Goethe Institut that hosted our concert.

Spring 1987 - April 16 to June 4

Cologne, West Germany - April 19 - At Teater Urania in the Ehrenfeld part of town with percussionist/composer Michael Ranta. See foto.

Boras, Sweden - April 21 - We played Cage’s Music for Four.

Schwäbisch Hall, West Germany - April 24 - This was the same situation as our 1985 tour.

Ghent, Belgium - April 26 - At Stichting Logos again.

Liege, Belgium - April 27 - At Le Cirque Divers, a wild, wild, wild bar. The owner asked us to quit playing, because customers were listening and not drinking. See foto.

Lisbon, Portugal - May 6 - At the Gulbenkian Foundation presenting the premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s Spots and Terry Riley’s The Room of Remembrance, and Fuentes’ Risas de los incas. Click here for cool fotos.

Porto, Portugal - May 7 - Doing the same program as in Lisbon. See foto.

Berlin, West Germany - May 11 - at Technische Universität.

Oprtalj, Yugoslavia - May 14 - This was the same situation as our 1985 tour. Click here for fotos.

Groznjan, Yugoslavia - May 17 - at the site of a well known summer music festival.

Spring 1989

We called this one the ‘Monster Tour’. It was 9 weeks long. When we got home, we were definitely monsters.

Lisbon, Portugal - at the Gulbenkian Foundation again, this time with Terry Riley for this part of the tour. We premiered his Salome’s Excellent Extension. With the addition of George Brooks on saxophones, we were a sextet.

Nottingham, England - presenting the Riley program. (2 pianos req.)

London, England - at Khan’s Indian restaurant in the West End, doing the Riley program for broadcast on national TV.

London - at Queen Elizabeth Hall doing the Riley program.

Bath, England - the Riley show again at the Michael Tippet Center.

Cardiff, Wales - the Riley show again at the local art barn.

after this point, it’s Zeitgeist without Riley and Brooks.

Bonn, West Germany - at Beethovenhaus

Stockholm, Sweden - at Kulturhuset playing Riley, Cage, Rzewski.

Skinnskateberg, Sweden - at their town center. As I recall, Eric Stokes’ Susquehannas was on this program.

Berlin, West Germany - at Badenscherhof, a jazz bar/restaurnat. We played three sets of repertoire. A small but very specia placel!

Fall 1990 - Sept. 22 to Okt. 6

Ghent, Belgium - Sept. 24 - at Stichting Logos

Bonn, West Germany - Sept. 27 - at Beethovenhaus. Click for fotos.

Berlin, West Germany - Sept. 28-30 - at Badenscherhof. On Oktober 2nd, our transit day back to West Germany, East Germany ceased to exist as a country, so we drove through a country that didn’t exist any more. Spring 1992 - April 5 to April 26 -

Cologne, Germany - April 9-11 - at Deutschlandfunk. This is their big national radio station. We were presenting a concert entirely of music by Frederic Rzewski. It was our first syndicated broadcast in Germany. It was exhausting and very much fun! Click for foto.

Berlin, Germany - April 16-18 - at the jazz bar/restaurant Badenscherhof for the third time. See sweet foto.

Copenhagen, Denmark - April 21 - at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Click here for fotos.

March 2009 - with the Lincoln Youth Symphony in Rome and Frascate. I was section coach and also played.

March 2011 - again with LYS, this time in Budapest and Vienna. In Vienna it was my pleasure to introduce the orchestra to the audience at the Orangerie 'auf Deutsch' - in German.
