My Personal Percussion Hero

Vic Firth is my personal percussion hero. Most players know his name from his product line of sticks, mallets, and accessories. From my point of view, he is most important for his contribution to music as a player and educator.
It boggles my mind that he played timpani for the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 50 years! Image the depth of his experiences with repertoire, conductors, and touring!
As an educator, he was a huge influence on me during my masters degree studies at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Not just in helping me with technique and so forth, but also with broader issues. He had real expectations of his students and projected his work ethic into our personal values.
